Mexico's Caribbean and Yucatan Peninsula are home to some great vacation destinations, but there's one place in particular that's getting a lot of attention right now.
An inland destination about four and a half hours from Cancun, Bacalar isn't located on the Caribbean coast, but it does have a beautiful lake that draws tourists from far and wide.
For this reason, and several others that we'll explain, this luxury destination south of Cancun is trending among tourists this winter.
Seven colored lagoon
Bacalar's main attraction for tourists is the stunning Seven Colored Lagoon, or Laguna de Siete Colores in Spanish.
This beautiful lake is exactly what its name suggests: a breathtaking combination of seven different shades of blue.
The lagoon's scenic views make it a great place for all kinds of water activities, especially kayaking and paddleboarding.

Bacalar has a rich history, a history that speaks to its authentic culture.
Not only was the region occupied by the Mayans before the arrival of the Spanish, but it was also often targeted and occupied by pirates in the 17th century.
There's much to explore in Bacalar, including Mayan ruins about an hour from the city, Cofunlich Ruins, the town's Mayan Museum, an impressive fort in the town center, and a must-visit 18th-century church. history and culture.

Bacalar's greatest claim to fame is its nature, including but not limited to the Seven Colors Lagoon.
One of the most visited natural attractions is Cenote Azul, a cenote located in the center of the lagoon and surrounded by a small forest.
There is also a huge lagoon area called Los Rapidos, which is basically a natural lazy river where you can float and descend.
Additionally, there is an island in the middle of the lagoon that serves as a stopover for migratory birds.
Each of these spots offers a unique natural experience that can only be found in Bacalar.

One of the great things about Bacalar is that it's the perfect place if you want a quieter, more laid-back vacation.
It's still something of a “biggest secret” when it comes to tourism, and many tourists who know it take day trips from different destinations rather than staying overnight.

Another reason why tourists love Bacalar is that the destination enjoys great weather throughout most of the year.
Daytime temperatures consistently average around 86 degrees and usually don't rise much above the low 90s.
The average nighttime temperature is a comfortable 68 degrees.

Why Accessing Bacalar Is Easier Than Ever
Bacalar is trending right now, but wait until the Maya train is fully operational.
This will allow tourists to travel quickly, comfortably, safely and more affordably between Bacalar and popular destinations such as Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancun.
The final section of the Maya Train project is expected to be completed by the end of February.
