MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Health Department has released a list of guidelines for public facilities to follow during a boil water advisory.
These establishments include schools, daycares, tattoo parlors, restaurants, and other businesses that serve the public.
The Ministry of Health provided the following list of guidelines:
- Identify a “responsible person” with operational planning and ongoing responsibility
Managing water-related issues and activities during a boil water advisory
Ensures compliance with facility health and safety protocols. - Securing drinking water.
- Store disinfected water in a clean, hygienic container with a lid.
- Please close the drinking fountains.
- Put up signs at drinking fountains in kitchens and bathrooms reminding people not to drink water.
- Discontinue the use of tap water for indoor and outdoor play and all recreational activities.
SCHD also included a list of guidelines for schools and child care facilities in its boil water advisory.
- Limit menus to foods that don't require water to cook, such as foods that can be cooked in the microwave.
- Use bottled, boiled, or sanitized water for food and beverage preparation tasks, cleaning fruits and vegetables, and mixing beverages.
- If possible, use disposable plates, cups, and utensils.
- Wash your hands with soap and water to reduce the number of germs.
SCHD says all public facilities that do not comply with the boil water advisory pose a serious threat to public health and are subject to closure.
