Duke has had an up-and-down season, giving Stanford a very tough game before losing 82-79 in overtime, and playing a solid game against South Carolina, but succumbing 77-61 in the second half. , with blowout losses to Clemson and Louisville.
But you could see Kara Lawson trying to put things together and they had won two in a row heading into Thursday night's game against #14 Virginia Tech. And for a while, it looked like it was going to be a tough night.
It just wasn't the case.
The Blue Devils got off to a slow start, but their defense eventually stifled. The Hokies were up 18-7 in the first quarter before Duke took over. The Blue Devils outscored Virginia Tech 14-8 in the second quarter, 27-8 in the third, and 15-12 in the third.
The final score was 63-46, and some may have thought Duke would win, but who could have seen the Devils winning by 17 points?
Elizabeth Kitley was great as usual, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 boards. She hit 9-18 shots, while the rest of her team hit only 8 shots.
Eight!
That's amazing defensive power.
Duke had 10 steals and 20 turnovers, converting them into 19 points. Raegan Richardson had 22 hits and Ashron Jackson had 13 hits.
Coach Lawson said, “It was a good win for us. I think it was a good performance by our defense that held the opponent to single digits in the middle of the game, that second quarter, that third quarter. They were clearly explosive. They are a team with offensive power. Also, in the third quarter, our offense started to take off and we were able to create separation. As a team, we have played close games like this, but last week… We haven't figured out how to win big games yet, and we're a young team. We've played more freshmen than anyone in the ACC, and we're still growing… I'm excited to get this win.”
This is probably Duke's biggest win of the season and definitely something to build on.
