If you want to know how bad the internet is, just go online and take a stand on cat declawing. An online conversation about elective pet surgery will go nuclear faster than you can say “Godwin's Law.”
El Paso City Councilman Chris Canales wants to change some of the rules regarding the types of elective surgeries for pets that are allowed here. Treatments covered include declawing, ear clipping, tail docking, as well as “bark stripping and bark removal” procedures.
In an article submitted by KFOX-14, El Paso veterinarian Roger Freund said he believes the decision to perform this type of elective pet surgery is best left between the pet owner and the veterinarian. It states that Freund also said that while he thinks some targeted surgeries can be helpful, he hasn't performed those types of surgeries in more than a decade.
It's no exaggeration to say that elective surgery for pets is a highly polarizing topic. Books have been written defending and condemning the practice of declawing alone. Here are the first comments on the KFOX story:
“I'm sick of people mutilating their pets for personal convenience or fashion appeal. Pit bulls shouldn't have anything mutilated and doctors should be against mutilation, but it's just to make a quick buck. Then you should do whatever it takes.”
This is exactly the comment.
“The Socialist People's Republic of El Paso is turning into California.”
As a reminder, as of this writing in January 2024, declawing is not 100% prohibited in California. However, he is in three states: Rhode Island, New York, and Maryland.
So where are you on that issue? Are you a disgusting monster or are you a godless communist? Those seem to be the two options here.
