TINLEY PARK — More than 100 animals were taken from the People's Animal Welfare Society, an animal shelter in south suburban Tinley Park, after a fire broke out in the laundry room around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to a statement from the shelter. It was done.
PAWS President Terry Buckley said Thursday that volunteers were inside the shelter when they started smelling smoke and a small fire started in a dryer. The fire was confined to the laundry room and quickly extinguished by first responders, but as smoke blanketed the building, authorities took the animals to Midwest Animal Hospital in Orland Park to be monitored for smoke inhalation. I was forced to do that.
“The biggest damage is the smoke damage,” Buckley said, explaining the essential process that veterinarians at Midwest Animal Hospital took to ensure the safety of the animals. “There were about a dozen cats that needed oxygen, and a few dogs were having some issues with the smoke, but most are doing very well so far.”
Buckley said she doesn't know when the building will open to the public. The fire caused significant smoke damage and destroyed his recently purchased $10,000 dryer. Buckley also anticipates significant medical costs for all animals adopted at Midwest Animal Hospital.
“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the many volunteers who worked with our firefighters to successfully rescue and transport all animals in the building to safety,” Tinley Park Fire Chief Steve Klotz said in a statement. Stated.
Buckley said she hopes people will continue to make financial donations to the shelter, but that so many good Samaritans have responded to the need, she said the He said he no longer needed blankets or towels.
“We'll have an insurance adjuster come out. We're asking a company to clean the building so the volunteers and the animals can get home safely,” Buckley said.
