A group of women in Greer, South Carolina, has been working for more than 10 years to ensure that no one in their community goes hungry, including their pets. And now, more than ever, they need help. Volunteers Susan Moon, Anne Edwards, Jan Fosson and Kathy Kauser manage the pet food program for Greer Area Ministries, which started about 11 years ago. The faith-based organization operates a community food pantry located at 738 S Line Street Extension, providing meals on wheels and clothing to people in the community. Every Monday, the women come together to pack bags of pet food and ship them to Meals on Wheels recipients the next day. Approximately 75 pounds of pet food is delivered each week through donations from pet businesses and local collection bins. “The shed where we keep all the pet food is usually filled to the top with bags and boxes of food,” Kauser told WYFF News 4. “Now it's almost empty,” she said, citing four reasons for owning a pet. The mission of food is extremely important. This is to ensure that our clients are getting a healthy diet every day by providing the right diet for their pets. If the pet is hungry, the client will feed it their own food before eating it themselves. This is to help clients adopt pets. Pet care gives clients a reason to stay active, and pets help with socialization and companionship. To give your pet proper nutrition – Human food is not made for pets. To help pets stay in their homes – If shelters are full and customers need to give up their pets if they can't care for them, the pets will likely be euthanized. Kaser also said cat food is in highest demand. “We are always in dire need of dry cat food,” she said. “Next up is canned food for cats and dogs.” Donations will be accepted at 738 S Line Street Extension Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Click here to donate online. She listed four reasons why Pet Food's mission is so important.
- Providing the right food for the pet will ensure the client has a healthy meal every day, so if the pet is hungry, the client will feed the pet their own food before eating it themselves.
- To help clients own pets — Caring for a pet gives clients a reason to stay active, and pets encourage sociability and companionship.
- Providing proper nutrition for your pet — Human food is not made for pets.
- To help pets stay at home – Shelters are full and pets are likely to be euthanized if owners are unable to care for them and have to give them up.
