TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – West Alabama's largest health care provider wants to give people more control over their health.
An event was held in downtown Tuscaloosa that drew a large crowd.
There were some fun activities and they had the opportunity to learn more about their own health conditions.
This was DCH Health System's second annual community health fair held at Government Plaza in downtown Tuscaloosa.
The health fair featured free health screenings, educational opportunities and time for attendees to speak with local doctors.
There were also activities for children and cooking demonstrations.
Organizers feel there are many preventive measures people can take to improve their health.
They also feel that some people may be willing to consult a professional about their health outside of the hospital.

“Hospitals can be scary places. Doctor's offices can be scary places. This is an opportunity for people in the community to go out and meet some doctors and ask what they want to know and maybe ask. It's an opportunity to learn about things that people are a little hesitant about. It's a very family-friendly environment,” explained Dawn Alexander, chief nursing officer at DCH Health System.
Alexander said DCH set the date for the health fair before the University of Alabama announced its A-Day Spring football game schedule.
They feel it's a coincidence that the number of people coming to the health fair was even higher before the start of the University of Alabama's spring games.
