The highly anticipated 2024 Spring Game did not disappoint for Virginia Tech.
The Maroons won 21-14, but there were more positives than negatives in this game. The roster was split as evenly as possible, and despite a windy day at Lane Stadium, there were some good pitching by the quarterback and big plays on both sides of the ball. Here are his three takeaways from the 2024 spring game.
Kyron Drones picked up where he left off last season, moving the ball down the field and pitching well. He completed 6-of-10 for 122 yards and two touchdown passes, one to P.J. Prioleau and the other to Jarikas Hairston. He moved all over the pocket and made some great reads and throws. If he's this good in the fall, the offense can and will score some serious points in 2024.
In eight games and a bowl game against Tulane last fall, the Hokies' defense was a big part of their success, winning six of their last nine games. On Saturday, the defense on both sides of the ball, especially those along the line, were active and all around. Keyshawn Burgos had a great day and Kemali Copeland, a transfer from Iowa Western Community College, made an interception. Sam Brumfield was a speedy linebacker, and Dorian Strong intercepted a drone in the end zone in the first quarter. The defense was as good as anyone expected.
The big takeaway from this game is that Virginia Tech has depth everywhere. We have wide receivers, running backs, offensive line, defensive line, you name it. Pry has done a great job adding talent in the transfer portal, and some of the freshmen and returning young players looked really great. Injuries are something you never want to face, but Hokies fans should be happy with the depth at many positions heading into fall camp.
All in all, it was a good afternoon all around for Virginia Tech, and fans should prepare for a potentially special fall in Blacksburg.
