Hurricane – A fire broke out on Monday night, destroying the home, killing a pet cat, and forcing residents and their two dogs to evacuate their home.
According to information posted on the Hurricane Valley Fire District's website, Facebook pagefirefighters were called to the building around 10:34 p.m. after receiving a report of a building fire.
Initial reports indicated a large fire broke out in the backyard adjacent to the home. Upon arrival, first responders found the exterior of the home engulfed in flames. The fire then spread to the attic, causing part of the roof to collapse. The first engine company arrived on the scene within five minutes and began extinguishing the fire, the post said.
At the time, southerly winds were blowing at about 12 miles per hour, threatening nearby buildings. Concerned that the fire could spread to nearby homes, police officers leading the first response team called for additional support.
Officials said smoke detectors alerted four residents, who were all successfully evacuated. Additionally, there were three pets inside, one cat and two dogs. Both dogs escaped unharmed, but the cat died and was found dead inside the house.
Firefighters were able to successfully extinguish the fire inside the residence. The outer wall of the adjacent building was damaged, but the fire did not spread indoors. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but no injuries were reported, authorities said.
The Hurricane Valley Fire District thanked responding agencies, including the Washington County Sheriff's Office, Hurricane City Police Department, St. George Fire Department, Washington City Fire Department, and Hildale/Colorado City Fire Department.
This report is based on statements from police or other responding parties and may not include the full scope of the findings.
