This sporting goods superstore is the largest retail store in Idaho with an aquarium, cafe, and 65-foot Ferris wheel.
MERIDIAN, ID — Customers camped out for hours and braved the cold for the long-awaited opening of SCHEELS in Meridian.
The supersized sporting goods store opened its doors to customers on Saturday, with hundreds of people lining up to check out Idaho's largest retailer.
“This is just a testament to the excitement the community has shown us,” said Assistant Store Leader Josh Reinhart.
Reinhart said the store may look like any other retail store from the outside, but once inside the 250,000-square-foot interior, you'll see that SCHEELS is much more than just store shelves. That's what it means.
“If you ask anyone, we're best known for our Ferris wheel,” Reinhart said. “So I think most people will see it and be excited to ride it.”
Spin the SCHEELS wheel for $1.
The store also features a 16,000-gallon saltwater aquarium with 600 fish, a wildlife trove, an arcade, a cotton candy store, and a cafe.
This massive store brings more than 500 new jobs to the employee-owned company and has a significant economic impact on the region.
“It really means we're getting more buy-in. The analogy I'm using is it's like our new home,” Reinhart said. “You won't leave your house a mess. You'll take care of it the right way. You're an employee and owner, so you'll take care of it the right way.”
