- Donald Trump is courting past big-time donors for his 2024 presidential campaign.
- But some major donors are even harder to identify, the Wall Street Journal reported.
- That could be a problem as the Biden campaign rakes in cash.
Donald Trump may have secured the Republican nomination, but he still hasn't secured some of his biggest mega-donors.
Trump is trying to win over big donors, but some say they are concerned about his legal problems. And they are choosing instead to focus their resources on parliamentary elections.
This is a worrying sign for the Trump campaign, especially as President Joe Biden is raking in his own campaign funds.
One wealthy holdout is Miriam Adelson, who along with her now-deceased husband donated $90 million to Trump's 2020 campaign, the largest amount he ever received, according to the Wall Street Journal The paper reported.
Adelson and Trump have dined together twice in recent months and speak regularly, the newspaper reported. People close to her told the magazine that she is likely to donate eventually, but that her key concerns are when and how much. As the campaign heats up, Trump needs all the money he can get.
Campaign contributions in March showed Mr. Biden and the Democrats raised more than $90 million, while Mr. Trump and the Republicans raised more than $65 million, the Journal reported. As of early April, Mr. Biden had collected about $192 million, entering the month with nearly $100 million more than Mr. Trump. The former president also has a long list of legal bills to contend with.
Trump may still gain ground. Many of his other loyal donors donate to both his legal funds and campaigns. For example, hotelier Robert Bigelow donated $1 million to Trump's legal costs and $20 million to the Trump campaign, the newspaper reported.
