JACKSON, Tenn. — A high school is offering great food to its teachers, staff and community.
Liberty Tech hosted the final meal of the semester at the student-run restaurant, Taste of Liberty.
“Today we're having catfish, pecan-toasted tilapia, spaghetti slaw, strawberry cake, and chocolate chess pie. This is our last restaurant this semester, so we'll be starting all over again when we return in August,” says Taste of Liberty. Assistant teacher Erma Johnson said.
Students taking this culinary course start as early as their first year.
One graduating student says she enjoys teaching her family how to cook.
“Yes, I think I'm a goat, so I try to show my family and people around me, 'No, you don't know what you're doing.' 'Then they start recommending new dishes and things that they learn about in class,' said Kimora, sous chef at Taste of Liberty.
Her classmates say the class helps her with what she already knows.
“I already have a background in cooking, and my mom is a caterer or a chef or something, but I just learn from her and give her what I've learned,” says Taste of Liberty sous chef Charis. said.
Community members will have the opportunity to purchase these meals.
“So when we make money, that money goes back into the program to buy food and whatever we do,” Johnson said.
This semester, students learned many skills, from kitchen preparation to working in a restaurant.
“So they learn a little bit of everything. They learn how to prepare a restaurant, they learn how to take orders. They learn how to serve it and watch them grow in that process. It’s really great sometimes,” Johnson said.
A large crowd gathered for the final meal, and many orders were placed.
