Two people have been charged with 94 counts of animal cruelty following a horrific animal cruelty incident in McAllen this weekend. As the investigation continues, FOX News' Karen Lucero provides an update on the status of the pets rescued from the Palm Valley Animal Society Center.
PBS Director Faith Wright said most of the animals rescued from the hoarding were transferred to other rescue groups. Of the 94 rescued animals, only 26 remain in the shelter. Thanks to the efforts of local organizations and volunteers, the animals have been groomed and cared for.
“It's been a tough weekend. We've seen dogs in the worst condition ever, but now they're back and dogs that used to be unable to walk because their legs were covered in dirt are now able to walk. “I was crying tears of joy when I saw them,” Wright said of the emotional journey of the rescue effort. .
Most of the dogs are being adopted out to rescue shelters in San Antonio, New York and Virginia, helping already overcrowded centers. There is some cautious optimism, as the cases against the women involved are ongoing and the dogs cannot be immediately adopted because they are still charged and in prison.
The center is trying to contact the owners of several microchipped dogs, and some have already visited shelters to search for lost pets. Meanwhile, the Palm Valley Animal Society is appealing for the community's support with financial donations to support the care and rehabilitation of the remaining animals.
