“Normally I'm not a very cheerful person,” she says. “I'm friendly, but otherwise I can get lost in my thoughts sometimes. So I need a little bit of awareness before I do that…I just need to switch mentally. I need to work on the role. There is.”
Behind the charismatic presence, a lot of effort goes into making the auction a success, and that can be stressful. But Chen has learned how to balance things out by having a supportive social network, maintaining an active lifestyle away from work, and remembering to get enough sleep. She enjoys working with processed products and finds it rewarding, which also motivates her.
Chen's appreciation for beautiful things began at an early age, influenced by her parents, who loved to take her to museums. During her childhood, she was too young to understand the significance of the objects in front of her, but her mother would point to certain objects and try to explain them in simple words. Ta.
“I think that planted a seed in my brain that I really enjoyed looking at our artwork,” Chen says.
After earning a bachelor's degree in biological sciences from America's prestigious Cornell University in 2006, Chen took a gap year to earn a master's degree in Chinese arts from Christie's Education in London. Christie's Education offers a Master's degree in Chinese Arts at Christie's Education, London. This educational institution is the only academic institution that is fully funded by a company. The one-year program paved the way for an illustrious career at a prestigious auction house. She has moved from junior to senior positions in both Hong Kong and New York, and currently serves as vice president and sales specialist for the Chinese Ceramics and Fine Arts division.
Chen has been an auctioneer at Christie's since 2016 and admits the job can be very stressful at times. After searching for valuable items to be auctioned, you need to create the highest quality sales catalog within a limited amount of time. Her week before the auction is filled with juggling time, attending meetings with colleagues, taking clients on personal preview tours, and possibly participating in media interviews. It doesn't have to be.
“Right before the auction, there is a meeting that I have to attend,” she says. “That's when the adrenaline really kicks in and you have to really concentrate. You have to be as prepared as possible by the time you get on the podium.”
Chen says that one of the important things to do well at work is “getting good quality sleep.” She believes that success and health go hand in hand, and getting enough rest ensures high energy levels to face the demands of work.
“Sleep is most important because it resets our bodies at night and prepares us for the next morning,” she says. “That way we can maintain a healthy lifestyle and continue doing the things we actually need to do and want to do. We need to stay healthy so we can be with our loved ones. I have to.”
On weekdays, Chen often watches something on TV to relax after finishing all his work for the day. “I watched just one episode of the anime, [then] I’m going to sleep,” she says.
Outside of work, I enjoy traveling and, of course, visiting museums. She also strives to make time for her exercise on a regular basis.
“I try to exercise three to five times a week,” she says. “the [normally] A combination of something more intense, like a tie [kick] Boxing, or something gentle like yoga, and if time allows, I might go hiking on the weekends if the weather is nice. ”
But she says spending time with friends and family is always the most important part of everything she does. “I have a very good church community, which is very important to me, and relationships with people are very important,” she says.
Although Chen has become one of the industry's most prominent female auctioneers, she remains balanced about the success she has achieved in her career.
“Success is about feeling comfortable and confident where you are,” she says. “It doesn’t have to be because you have a certain amount of money in your bank account or because you are a certain person in this world.
“Some people don't need a career, while others find it very rewarding. For me, I'm definitely learning a lot and meeting a lot of interesting people. I've met a lot of people during my career. These guys have become my lifelong friends, and I'm very grateful for that.”
