A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 shook Taiwan's east coast on Wednesday. According to reports, the epicenter of the earthquake was located about 11 miles south of Hualien City. However, the shaking was felt across the island. Immediately after the disaster, many people took to social media to share footage of the devastation it caused. One video showed a building collapsing, while another showed a bridge shaking violently.
Journalist Sulaiman Ahmed shared a video showing buildings shaking and collapsing during the earthquake. He added: “According to local Chinese netizens, it was the strongest earthquake to hit the autonomous island in 25 years.”
This is also a video of the bridge shaking. “The shaking was so severe that commuters stopped,” a caption posted next to the video said.
ANI forced X to share horrifying “footage from Beiban Street, Hualien City, Hualien Prefecture, eastern Taiwan.” In the video, people are seen running towards the partially collapsed building. The area around the building can be seen to be filled with rubble.
“Passengers witness Taiwan earthquake,” user X wrote while posting the video. The footage shows people clinging to seats and guardrails to protect themselves as the subway shakes.

According to Taiwan's earthquake monitoring agency, the magnitude was 7.2. However, the U.S. Geological Survey puts it at 7.5. Following the earthquake in Taiwan, the Japan Meteorological Agency predicted a tsunami in the Okinawa Islands in southern Japan.
