To showcase all that Minot has to offer the community and region, Minot's First District Health Department hosted an open house on Monday.
“We want the public to know what we do and everything we have to offer.” Executive Director Holly Brekus said: “When many people hear about public health, they think of COVID-19. We offer a lot more programs and services than just COVID-related services.”
April 1st marked the beginning of National Public Health Week. The American Public Health Association will be holding events across the country this week to promote the services public health officials provide to their communities.
The First District Health Department offers 14 programs including emergency preparedness and response, school health, family planning and sexually transmitted diseases, general nursing, injury prevention, and more.
The District 1 Health Department also has an Environmental Health Department that provides training, information, and/or guidance to the public on a variety of topics, including food safety, rabies, and hazardous waste. The department also regulates, polices and inspects public places such as parks, campgrounds and swimming pools, as well as many food and beverage establishments.
“We also try to be good partners in the community, which is why we offer employment services, community health services and other organizations here.” Brekus said. “If community members can't find a program or service that's right for them, they can turn to each other. We also want to know what they're doing and help them understand what we have to offer.” It would be great for us to know what's going on.”
