Improvements to Saddle Creek Road are adjusting daily commutes for some nearby residents, and in addition, a new apartment complex is planned for construction right next door.
Multiple lane closures on Saddle Creek Road and Leavenworth Street have local business owners concerned.
Leah Roberts Denomme has owned and operated Weird Wild Stuff Vintage for 15 years and has hand-selected every item that appears on the shelves.
“What one person doesn't like, someone else might like,” Denhomme said.
Denhomme says the vintage pieces in her store are very much in keeping with the historic district, and each home has its own unique character. But with recent construction closing off Leavenworth and Saddle Creek streets, she worries her store could become collateral for new development.
“I don't think they care about someone blocking a street with a small business. They have a bigger purpose,” Denhomme said.
We reached out to City Planner Eric England to discuss new development and the future of the area.
“You know there's a lot of demand for new housing units in this area and a lot of that is a result of everything the medical center is doing right now and future plans and growth,” England said. .
England said things will be “painful” for business owners for now, but he believes these improvements will draw more people to the neighborhood.
“Our public works department is responsible for all road closures and lane closures and is always very willing to work with business owners,” England said.
Despite the threat of reduced road traffic, Denhomme says she is not opposed to change.
“It has to be done carefully…so I hope they keep that in mind for future projects,” Denhomme said.
Saddle Creek Road improvements and construction of the Walter Apartments are expected to be completed in 2025.
