Earlier this week, American Airlines announced it was relaxing some of its pet policies, allowing pet owners to bring their pets and a full-sized carry-on on the plane.

Previously, travelers who brought pets on planes could only bring pets small enough to fit under the seat in front of them for $150, according to the Associated Press. He had to check in larger items for $35 or leave pets in the cargo hold.
“We made the changes to provide pet owners with a more convenient and comfortable experience on American Airlines,” a spokesperson confirmed to The Associated Press. The change took effect Thursday.
American Airlines is now allowing passengers to bring carry-on bags and personal items on board in addition to pets, the Associated Press reported.
A spokesperson did not explain the reason for the change due to the Good Friday holiday, according to CBS News.
Travel blogger Gary Leff, who first wrote about the change, said, “Sometimes dogs count as carry-on baggage even though you're paying an additional (pet) fee that's higher than the ticket.'' It was always frustrating,” he said. Friday, according to the Associated Press. Leff hopes American Airlines' new changes will also help prevent travelers from falsely claiming their pets are service animals. Service animals will reportedly board the airline for free.
As reported by CBS News, the American Kennel Club has announced that most airlines will count pet carriers as carry-on baggage. Other airlines that allow pets include Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and Frontier Airlines.
