Jacksonville, Florida – Multiple residents of two apartment complexes in Arlington are at a boiling point after a pack of dogs terrorizes them and their pets.
Residents of the Oak Hammock apartment complex and the Oakwood Villa complex on Acme Street near Kona Avenue believe the dog came from a nearby home.
Surveillance video showed a pack of loose dogs attacking several cats and kittens owned by Karen Harrell and living on the front patio of the Oakwood Villas complex. .
Harrell said she grabbed a stick to protect her pet and keep the dog off the patio. Then I hear her say: [expletive] gun. “
Another night, the same pack of dogs returned to her terrace and attacked another cat.
“Since February 25th, we have killed seven members of our family, and I call them family. These cats have been coming to this apartment where we have been living since 2020. I might get a little emotional because I'm there,” Harrell said.
The latest attack occurred earlier this week. The cat named Sox did not survive.
“One dog had the cat's head in its mouth and the other two were tugging at the ends,” Harrell said.
Today, Harrell only has two cats left, one of which is missing a hair on the back of its neck from the attack.
Harrell said she builds a cinderblock fence every night to keep dogs out and keep cats safe. But cats aren't the only ones exposed to fear.
“The kids are in the park and they run here saying the dog is coming. The tenants have to keep the kids inside and they don't feel safe coming out onto this property. '' Harrell said.
Across the street at Oak Hammock Apartments, neighbors have received similar complaints about the same pack of dogs.
“We need to do something about the dogs because they're attacking people. There's a problem around here,” one man told News4JAX.
Tangela Jackson said the dog bit a child and a man.
“It's very worrying because our children play here every day,” Jackson said.
Another man said he was chased by a dog.
“I was walking outside to get something from the car and when I got to the car I saw the dog. I turned around and started running. The door was open so I came back and jumped on top of the car. ” he said.
Animal control officials were aware of the problem, but it's unclear what is being done to prevent further attacks.
News4JAX reached out to animal control but did not immediately receive a response.
