It's very easy to do and a useful tool when traveling to a new city or on vacation. I may be an iPhone user, but when I'm traveling I use Google Maps to search for specific locations and explore neighborhoods.
Google is working to improve the way you discover new places in Google Maps. The company has announced new features that will make traveling this summer easier than before. As expected, some of them are powered by artificial intelligence (AI). And Google has announced that a design update will be coming soon.

For some Google Maps fans, especially those who didn't like last year's drastic color palette changes, the design details may be most important. Don't get too excited about Google Maps returning to its old colors. That's unlikely to happen.
However, Google said at the end of a blog post detailing the new features that a design update is coming.
This summer's “fresh new look” includes “a cleaner home screen with fewer tabs and new pin colors to make it easier to find places on the map.” This should help with detection capabilities, which is the main purpose of this announcement.

Google Maps now shows a curated list of destination recommendations. These are provided by the 'Top Sites' and Google Maps communities and will be available this week in over 40 cities in the US and Canada.

Google offers three types of listings in Google Maps, each with their own emoji icon.

- 💎 The Gem List is for locations that may be the neighborhood's best-kept secrets. There's a great restaurant here that's still under the radar.
If you're interested in creating travel lists in Google Maps, you'll be able to submit them to Google later this year.
Whether you want to share your listings with others or not, Google wants to make it easy to create listings on Google Maps. Finally, Google is leveraging AI within Google Maps to gain “critical insights from the maps community.” When you select a location within the app, AI provides a summary of photos and reviews.
Additionally, when you see images of food in a new city, it will tell you what the food is called. Other useful information, such as materials and prices, is also available. This feature is sure to come in handy when making reservations for places you find while traveling.
Google SGE can help you plan your vacation
In another blog post also focused on summer travel, Google announced another useful new feature that uses AI for travel purposes. You can go to Google Search SGE and type in a prompt like “Plan his 3-day history-themed trip to Philadelphia.” The AI generates a list of suggestions that includes ideas for local attractions and restaurants, as well as flight and hotel options.
This is another great feature to have when planning your vacation, and it becomes even more useful when you integrate it directly into Google Maps. This sounds similar to what the Rabbit r1 should be able to do. The difference is that the latter actually books everything for you once you grant access to the appropriate apps.
