“Hamaspital” does not condone many war crimes
MANHATTAN: The logic behind Alan Dershowitz and Andrew Stein's approval of Israel's way of conducting its war in Gaza rests in one line of their half-page essay (“Hamas turns Gaza hospital into 'Hamaspital'” editorial) , March 21). They claim that Israel is “pursuing legitimate goals by legitimate means.” Well, I and much of the world disagree with that.
It is not legal to kill every lone Hamas fighter ever alive, no matter where they are or how many civilians are in their way. Destroying three-quarters of Gaza's buildings and causing the deaths of women and children is not legal. It is not legal to destroy hospitals and schools and cause hunger and disease. It is not legal to force more than 1.5 million people from their homes and force them to live in tents on the streets. It is not legal to shut off water, electricity, or sewage. It is unjustified to obstruct humanitarian aid operations.
Destroying Hamas's ability to attack Israel again, as it did on October 7, is justified, and that goal was achieved months ago. How will Hamas repeat such attacks against Israel in the future? Will they gather outside in the flattened former district, march unnoticed into Israel and attack while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Israel Defense Forces are on another 14-hour vacation?
Hamas is no longer a threat to Israel. If so, please explain in detail under what circumstances it would be possible to attack Israel again. If they fail to do so, then they agree that Israel has already won and it is time to stop. stephen davis
field report
FOREST HILLS: Do American Israeli cheerleaders bother to follow Israeli media before dutifully distributing government propaganda? Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu has insisted that the IDF must invade Rafah to “end” Hamas. So why did Omar Cohen, the chief of the Israeli Special Forces Commando Brigade, say this recently after withdrawing from the Hamad Town area of Khan Yunis, which was destroyed by Israeli airstrikes in early December? Is it? It is a sophisticated fighting force with a clear chain of command unlike anything seen anywhere else in Gaza. ” That means Bibi's onslaught has fallen short of annihilating Hamas, as many have warned throughout this brutality. There is no military solution to extremist movements that exist solely to counter generations of militaristic oppression. This also means that Bibi's goal is to “end” Gaza, as Rafah is the last area largely undestroyed. This is a genocide to destroy Gaza, not Hamas. abe green

Brooklyn: As a resident of Brooklyn, I have voted for Chuck Schumer in every election since 1974, when he ran for the New York State Assembly. I love him and think he's doing a great job representing New Yorkers. I have voted for Chuck many times in the past, but I have never consulted an Israeli about whether or not to vote for him. The reason is that Israelis have their own politics, and we have our own. Sorry, Chuck, please get out of the election. steve miller

Yonkers: Amazon and other companies are suspected of illegally selling radio signal jamming devices that can “disrupt'' drones, reported in the March 21 issue (“FCC eyes Amazon for allegedly selling illegal electronic devices''). ). Since the existence of these devices is well known, why don't the US, Israeli, and Ukrainian militaries use them to destroy drones in flight, or even better, guide them to their launch sites? We are confident that we have the ability to defeat the jamming and jamming techniques that may be used by those who use drones as offensive weapons.? mark bloom

DANBURY, Conn.: Shohei Ohtani has played seven seasons in Major League Baseball in the United States and is in his eighth season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He received a contract worth nearly $1 billion in compensation. During that time, he learned to speak English and ultimately didn't have to pay the interpreter who swindled him out of $4.5 million, which he thinks allowed him to gamble and lose on other major league sports. UNION, N.J.: It's been nearly two months since the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bipartisan child tax credit expansion and sent it to the Senate. The bill is estimated to benefit 16 million children from low-income households, including 5.8 million children under the age of 6. In an election year, Congress will want to pass tax cuts for households (and small businesses). ). However, a small number of senators are blocking this for political gain. Families don't have to wait months for something popular and necessary to be passed by Congress. It's time for the senators to show us their hands. If this bill passes, families win. If that fails, senators can explain to voters why they choose to keep children in poverty. Vote Yes on the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act. Eugene Gorin

Hamilton Square, New Jersey: To voice actor Nancy Brenner: You're right. Please open your ears and listen. Trump also did not say he would become a dictator “only” on day one. When someone shows you who they really are, believe it. Should we believe that Trump will be a dictator for just one day? We should believe, then, that he would gut our 250-year-old constitution, use the military against the people of this country, and exact revenge against all perceived enemies. What he often says is that if you're not with him, you're against him. It's a full-time dictator. Eileen Johnson

basic needs
Brooklyn: Hunger is a pernicious problem for many college students, with 40% of them feeling food insecure. The crisis continues as inflation rises. Rent, groceries, and living costs are higher than ever. Students are struggling to put food on the table, and living in these conditions can make it difficult to ask for help. For many people, food insecurity is associated with shame and embarrassment. The Hunger-Free Campus Act addresses food insecurity in private and public institutions. It will provide resources such as grants targeting food insecurity and support housing displacement assistance. New York has just introduced this law. We need to lobby our legislators to advance this legislation for the sake of our students and our future. Students cannot be expected to excel academically if their basic human needs are not met.
