Fairfax County Animal Shelter offers many valuable resources, including vaccines and a microchip clinic. The clinic, offered by the Fairfax County Animal Shelter Resource Center, will allow pet owners to get their pets vaccinated, microchipped and pet permits. Vaccines offered include rabies vaccine, DHPPi (canine distemper) vaccine, and FVRCP (feline distemper) vaccine.
These vaccines are available at a discount to pet owners. The state requires rabies vaccinations, and dogs and cats must be vaccinated by 4 months of age.
The DHPPi vaccine is for dogs only. We offer vaccinations against serious viruses such as canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus types 1 and 2, canine parainfluenza virus, and canine parvovirus.
For cat owners, it is important that their pets receive the FVRCP vaccine. Feline distemper vaccines immunize cats against serious viruses such as feline rhinotracheitis, feline calicivirus, and feline panleukopenia.
The clinic also offers microchips for dogs and cats. Microchips allow pet owners to track their pets if they can't find them. A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and contains a unique ID number that can be obtained by scanning your pet with a special tool. When a lost pet with a microchip arrives at a shelter, the pet's unique ID number is searched and the guardian's information is displayed.
According to animal shelter officials, microchipping is similar to vaccination, and owners do not need to worry about the effects on their pets. Although their pet may be gentle in the area that day, lasting pain or complications are extremely rare.
The shelter provides these services at affordable rates and does not require veterinary testing. Pet owners can have their pets vaccinated against rabies, DHPPi (dogs only), FVRCP vaccinated (cats only), or microchipped for $20.
The clinic does not require pre-registration or reservations and only accepts cash. Dogs and cats are welcome, but dogs must be kept on a leash and cats must be kept in a secure carrier.
Only limited testing will be performed at the Vaccine and Microchip Clinic and pets will only be tested to determine if they are eligible to receive a vaccine and/or microchip. Additional medical concerns or underlying conditions will not be diagnosed or treated at the clinic.
Pet owners can bring their pets to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter clinics located on the Michael R. Frye and Lawton campuses. The Michael Frey Campus is located at 4500 West Ox Rd. Located in Fairfax, the Lorton campus is located at 8875 Lorton Rd. In Lawton.
Several upcoming clinics will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. At the Lawton campus he will hold clinics on April 5th, May 3rd, and June 7th. Clinics will be held on April 8, May 13, and June 10 at the Michael R. Fry Campus.
Pet owners should keep a few things in mind when visiting a clinic. You will need to secure your pet's vaccination records, as proof of previous vaccinations will be required to obtain her 3 years' worth of rabies, DHPP, and her FVRCP vaccines. Without these, your pet will need her 1 year rabies vaccine and a booster shot of her DHPP or FVRCP after she is given 3-4 weeks.
Fairfax County Animal Shelter is committed to providing the highest quality care to the pets in our care while also increasing pet retention rates and access to pet services. One of the many ways we do this is through vaccine and microchip clinics.
“Our clinics provide critical resources to support pet parents in our communities. By providing affordable services, we provide essential wellness care and essentials for residents and their pets. We aim to make it more accessible,” said Rebecca Cavedon, communications manager for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. “In 2023, our clinic saw more than 860 pets in her clinic, and we are thrilled to more than double the number of clinics this year and serve even more pets and their families.
