Threads, Meta's text-based social media platform, has come a long way since its inception. Initially, Threads had limited functionality and was just a space where people could share their thoughts with the world. Meta gradually revealed more features of the platform, such as follow tabs, hashtags, and separate For You and Following updates. It is not wrong to say that over time, the app continued to add features similar to He X (previously called Twitter). And now, yet another feature is coming that reminds us of Elon Musk's platform.
According to a report from Business Insider, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Tuesday that Threads will be rolling out a trending section in the US.
The announcement follows Zuckerberg's statement five weeks ago, in which he said the app was experimenting with displaying the top topics on threads. He highlighted the team's dedication to refining this feature before expanding it to more countries and languages. The latest update is now live in the US and under the search bar he will display 5 trending topics.
Meta said in a statement that its AI system identifies trending topics based on the number of posts mentioning the topic and the engagement level of those posts. Selected topics will undergo a review process to ensure they are not misleading or duplicate.
Threads' trending topics feature is similar to X, but it differs from Elon Musk's platform when it comes to presentation. In Threads, trending topics are placed discreetly below the search bar and only five topics are displayed.X, on the other hand, lists up to 30 trending topics and displays them in your desktop sidebar.[探索]There is a dedicated section under the tabs.
For the unversed, Threads was launched by Meta in July 2023. It was developed as a conversation platform for users, leveraging the success of Instagram. For a long time, you couldn't delete your Threads account without also deleting Instagram. However, this changed a few months ago.
As Zuckerberg revealed during Meta's fourth-quarter earnings call, Threads attracted 100 million sign-ups in its first week and has since gained an additional 30 million monthly active users. At some point, this app was considered as an alternative to X because it had similar functionality.
Similar to X, Threads allows users to share text-based posts of up to 500 characters, videos of up to 5 minutes, and links and photos. Users can follow creators and other users and discuss topics of mutual interest.
If you recall, when Threads launched, X introduced some big changes, such as imposing rate limits and preventing users without Twitter accounts from viewing tweets. This left many users confused and looking for alternative platforms to share their thoughts with the world.
