A Google engineer shared an incident in which an Uber driver in Bangalore asked him and his friend to get out of the cab after requesting them not to talk on the phone while driving. Raj Vikramaditya, who was visiting Bangalore at the time, detailed his experience to Moneycontrol. He said the estimated journey time was an hour and a half, during which the driver continued to talk on the phone through a loudspeaker for the first half hour. Vikramaditya politely asked the driver to use headphones or answer the phone later.
Upon this suggestion, the driver told him and his friend to get out of the taxi. Recalling the incident, Vikramaditya said, “We were abused and told to get out of the car, saying, 'I don't feel safe riding with you.' The post quickly garnered more than 400,000 views and hundreds of comments.
The post went viral, prompting many people to share similar experiences when they took an Uber cab. One X user said, “I had a similar experience. My Uber driver kept calling me and it annoyed me and my friend. I called another friend and we both… I started talking and laughing loudly and the person on the other end hung up on me.”
Another said, “I remember the trip we took from Bangalore to Chennai in 2022. He kept talking the whole time even though we asked him to stop. He just didn't care. I gave up after about two hours.”
In response to Vikramaditya's now-viral post, Uber India asked him to share the date and time of his ride and his contact details. The next day, Vikramaditya wrote in another post that Uber had contacted him and promised to take appropriate action.
He also suggested introducing new features to taxi service companies to solve such problems, writing: 1) Raise an issue through the app about no air conditioning on board 2) Raise an issue about “phone use”. In both cases, Uber asks customers to send a photo or small clip, which the AI then verifies and can trigger a warning or, if there are multiple warnings, take some action. ”
