For most people, crocheting is just a hobby, but for Jonah Larson, a boy from Wisconsin, it's a way to support the orphanage he was adopted from. Jonah was adopted from an Ethiopian orphanage when he was five months old. Jonah became fascinated with crochet when she was five years old, when she first saw a crochet hook and asked her mother what it was. His adoptive mother, Jennifer Larson, introduced him to crochet and bought him crochet supplies. According to NBC Today, Jonah started watching his YouTube tutorials and made a dish towel within an hour. His hard work and speed of learning amazed his mother.
Soon, Jonah and his family began posting his crocheted creations on social media, and Jonah began selling his crocheted creations. Currently, he has over 400,000 followers on his Instagram account. Proceeds from these sales were donated to Roots of Ethiopia, a non-profit organization that helps underprivileged children in the area where Jonah was born. Roots Ethiopia also supports the orphanage where Jonah grew up before being adopted. Funds donated through Jonah's crochet work are helping to improve the facilities of the former orphanage.
Jonah's impressive efforts were recently shared on the popular Instagram page Good News Movement. In response to the post, an Instagram user commented: “It's so beautiful to see someone use their talents and gifts to bless the lives of others.” As expected of Yona! You are an inspiration to all! ” Another said, “Those kids are so sweet and deserve every blessing they receive. If I were a young woman I would definitely adopt!!!” said.
Jennifer Larson told NBC Today that before Jonah learned to crochet, he would often act out and get distracted in class. But now his concentration has improved. His teacher suggested that Jonah should bring crochet to class. Jennifer Larson said crocheting can be calming and “medicinal in a way.”
In an interview with NBC Today, Jonah said, “I think crochet is a positive way to bring the world together, and it's just a craft that people come together to have fun with.” “I want to become a surgeon so I can go back to Ethiopia and provide free surgeries.”
