World Kidney Day is a global health awareness initiative that focuses on the importance of having healthy kidneys. It also aims to reduce kidney-related health problems and raise awareness about innovations in treatments. This year it will be held today, March 14th.
Early diagnosis of kidney-related diseases and consuming healthy foods can help ensure healthy functioning of the kidneys. Nephrologist Dr Preeti Bansal interacted with News18 and revealed the foods that can ensure healthy functioning of the kidneys.
1. Blueberry
Blueberries and strawberries are very important in maintaining healthy kidney function. Blueberries are also rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that prevent kidney inflammation. Nephritis is inflammation of the kidneys.
2. Curd or buttermilk
According to Dr. Preity, the kidneys are highly vulnerable to the effects of toxins and can be seriously damaged by them. Therefore, you need to consume something that cleanses and detoxifies the kidneys. For this purpose, you can consume curd or buttermilk, which contains probiotics, which are a storehouse of good bacteria levels.
3. Grains
Consumption of millets such as barley, ragi and kutki (Picorhiza kurroa) helps in cleansing the kidneys. Millet, or ragi, has a low sodium content and should basically be consumed by patients suffering from kidney-related diseases. Consuming large amounts of sodium can increase blood pressure and put strain on your kidneys. Including millets, especially ragi which is low in sodium, in your diet can reduce stress on your kidneys and maintain proper blood pressure.
4. Green and yellow vegetables
Eating green leafy vegetables also supports healthy kidney function due to their anti-inflammatory properties. They eradicate inflammation from the kidneys. Leafy vegetables are stores of potassium, which is necessary for people suffering from kidney disease. The amount of potassium levels that kidney disease patients can consume each day depends on the stage of their kidney disease and the type of dialysis they are receiving.
