SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Department of Health Services (DHCS) is launching a new app aimed at youth with mental health needs.
As part of a $4.7 billion health initiative approved by California Governor Gavin Newsom, anyone between the ages of 0 and 25 can now access the program.
DCHS Director Michelle Barth spoke about the importance of the new Soluna and BrightLife Kids apps in supporting the mental health needs of young Californians.
“Children, teens, and young adults are facing a mental health crisis. To ensure that youth have access to the behavioral health services they need, the state will provide California youth and their caregivers with access to the professionals they need. We are launching two new apps to help you get help,” Barth said. “This tool is flexible and free to all California families, regardless of income, health insurance, or immigration status. We encourage all California youth and parents to access the Soluna app and Brightlife Kids app. , we encourage you to check whether they are suitable for you.”
Both the Master Plan for Children's Mental Health and the Children and Young People's Action Initiative will see anyone in this age group benefit from these new programs at no cost.
One study states that one-third of California youth are experiencing severe mental distress, and incidents of anxiety, depression, and self-harm are on the rise.
“Nearly two-thirds of depressed children in California do not receive treatment. This platform will expand access to critical behavioral health supports to reach California’s diverse children, youth, and families. Our youth will have an accessible option to get the help they need,” said Dr. Mark Ghaly, California Health and Human Services Secretary.
Limitations such as income, lack of insurance, or disability are not an issue when it comes to accessing these programs.
Free coaching, educational content, care navigation services, peer communities, and crisis and safety protocols will all be part of these efforts.
In addition to providing services to youth in need, licensed behavioral health professionals can also monitor users' app usage.
