Due to the rising cost of veterinary care, many pet owners are considering investing in pet insurance.
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Many pet owners considering pet insurance wonder, “What is it all about and do I need it?”
At Columbia Veterinary Emergency Trauma and Specialty (CVETS), we are able to care for hundreds of animals each day. Autumn Trembley, Director of Systems Integration at CVETS, believes pet insurance is an important investment for pet owners.
“We want to be able to provide the best medicine,” Trembley said. “Our pets are our family, and we want to make sure they receive the same quality care that we would want to receive in the human medical field.”
Similar to human health insurance, pet insurance operates on monthly or annual premiums. Covers a variety of veterinary expenses, including illnesses, accidents, and daily care. However, coverage varies depending on a variety of factors.
“It's really important to see if there's a genetic problem or something hereditary,” Trembley says.
Shiver emphasizes the importance of doing your research when looking for a pet insurance plan.
“Typically, you can go to a pet insurance website and get a quote,” Trembley says. “Enter your pet's age, pet breed, and the type of coverage you're looking for. It's important not to go to the first place you see. Does my veterinarian pay directly? Accept the same? What is your deductible? How much coverage do you have? Is there a cap? Check out the differences and think about what's best for you and your family. ”
Ultimately, pet insurance can provide peace of mind when making difficult financial decisions in the event of a veterinary emergency.
