Virgin Australia plans to introduce pets on domestic flights
Australian airline Virgin Australia has announced plans to make history by becoming the first Australian airline to allow pets on board, the Daily Mail reports. Therefore, in the near future, small cats and dogs will also be able to fly on board with their owners, making for a stress-free travel experience for both pets and pet parents.
Additionally, this announcement marks a significant step towards making air travel more inclusive and convenient for pet lovers across Australia. Subject to regulatory approval, Virgin Australia plans to roll out the new service within the next 12 months.
Virgin Australia has announced that only “small cats and dogs” are allowed on board. However, according to the Guardian, airlines have not provided specific criteria for defining “small”. This approach mirrors US practice, where airlines with similar systems often impose restrictions on specific breeds.
Nevertheless, airlines have rules for how owners can transport their pets. Pets must be transported in an approved carrier provided by the airline and must remain under the seat in front of their owner for the duration of the flight.
Additionally, Virgin Australia Group CEO Jane Hrdlicka expressed excitement about the pet-friendly initiative. In her words: “Our love of animals has always been in her DNA at Virgin Australia and we're thrilled to be taking Australia's first pet on board.”
She says the airline's passengers consistently demonstrate a strong desire to travel with their pets. Virgin Australia therefore wants to make this aspiration a reality. “This is common overseas and has been proven to work,” she says.
