CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WFXR) – Virginia Tech graduate center Elizabeth Kitley has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference's 2023-24 Women's Basketball Kayo Award recipient for the third year in a row.
The ACC Women's Basketball Player of the Year award honors the legendary Yaw, who won 737 games as a head coach, led North Carolina State to four ACC Tournament championships, and led the 1988 U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal. named. Ms. Yeo, who passed away in January 2009, is also remembered for her leadership and her courage in the fight against breast cancer.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award was established in September 2007 to be presented annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sport. Candidates for this award must have maintained their 3.0 grade point average (GPA) throughout their career, as well as maintaining her 3.0 in each of the past two semesters. This award is based on 60% academic performance and 40% athletic performance.
Kitley, a native of Summerfield, North Carolina, has been named ACC Player of the Year in each of the past three seasons. A four-time first-team All-ACC selection and All-American, she was one of only two ACC players to average a double-double this season and was second in the conference with 22.8 points per game. It is ranked No. 1 and has achieved results. She has a league-best 11.4 rebounds per game. She recorded a conference-high 19 double-doubles this season, leading the Hokies to first place in the regular season and a double-bye in this week's 2024 Alley ACC Women's Basketball Tournament. Kitley has won ACC Player of the Week six times this season, tying the conference's single-season record held by Duke's Alana Beard in 2002-03 and 2003-04. . Kitley is a four-time All-ACC Academic Team honoree and has been named to the Dean's List and Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester during her time at Virginia Tech. Kitley becomes the fourth consecutive Kay Yow Award winner in ACC history, the first since Duke's Lexi Brown last year in the 2017-18 season, and the first person in history to win the award for the third time with this year's honor.
