TAMPA, Fla. — Tommy Kahnle, who threw a 20-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, was asked if he expected to miss the season opener on March 28 and answered, “I'm leaning toward that.”
Kahnle is recovering from shoulder inflammation that ended his 2023 season with his last appearance on Sept. 20. The player said the discomfort lasted longer than expected during the offseason, but added that he feels 100% and is only a little behind his normal spring training schedule.

“There's no pain or anything,” he said. “I was just riding in the truck.”
Burdi is impressive
Right-hander Nick Vardy, who is not on the roster, pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts in the game between the Yankees and Rays at Steinbrenner Field, continuing his quest to be on the opening day roster.
Burdi had a 3.00 ERA and had seven strikeouts in three innings pitched. The 31-year-old posted a 9.39 ERA in 19 major league games with Pittsburgh from 2018-20 and with the Cubs last season. But the Yankees are impressed with his big arm.
Manager Aaron Boone said he thought Burdy was even better than he was last time against the Orioles, when he allowed a hit and a walk while striking out.
“I thought he was really efficient at his job today,” Boone said. “Today was good.”
