Springbok hooker Bongi Mbonambi has revealed he has apologized to referee Amy Barrett-Theron following an exchange during Saturday's United Rugby Championship match.
Mbonambi was criticized for his actions and overall attitude when he wanted to know why the Sharks' try was disallowed.
The Durban side were 19-10 behind at the time and then lost 40-10 to the Lions, their 10th defeat in 11 games for URC.

The Springbok hooker was dissatisfied with the TMO call and the situation could have escalated as a result, but Barrett-Theron did a great job defusing the situation while paying tribute to the 33-year-old. I let it happen.
She first asked the Sharks' captain: “Bongi, will you walk this path with me?” Before you go on, “Bongi, can I talk to you?” Listen, I want to know you and who you are. I totally respect you, and I'm well aware that all of your players have probably played more games than I've refereed at URC.
“But we are on the same field, so if you could show me the same respect that I have shown you, I would greatly appreciate it.”
As if that worked, Mbonambi then changed his tune and asked Barrett-Theron: “They're just looking for answers from me. So, was that a foul play?” Barrett-Theron responded, “Yes, that was a foul play.”
Mbonambi was then heavily criticized, with the Springbok hooker being described as “rude”, “impatient” and “disrespectful”.
The 33-year-old has since released a statement through the Sharks, apologizing for his actions and to Barrett Theron.
“As players, we have to take a hard look at ourselves after this result. We cannot blame others and we have a lot of hard work ahead of us. ” is written.
“I’m an all-in type of player, so sometimes my emotions get the better of me.
“I have full respect for the officials and the role they play in our sport. It was never my intention to come across as rude or difficult. I spoke to the referee at half-time. I apologized, but I didn't mean to be rude.”

Head coach John Plumtree also sent a message to supporters who are growing frustrated with his team's poor performance.
“It was a disappointing performance for us and we weren't good enough,” he said.
“As a club we are better than this and have set high standards for ourselves but at this stage we have not achieved them.
“Like everyone else who loves this brand, we are hurting and recognize the hurt and disappointment of our fans.
“We would like to thank our fans and sponsors for standing by us during this difficult time. Rest assured that there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes to ensure future success.”
