Military life seems to suit Nate Campbell.
Discipline is nothing new for Norwin's senior wrestlers.
“I don't drink or do drugs. I get eight hours of sleep a night. I prioritize my schoolwork, but I also exercise and wrestle every day,” Campbell said. “I prioritize hydration and nutrition by putting in things that are good for my body.”
Eventually, the structure may be taken out to sea.
Campbell was accepted to the Naval Academy, where he would continue his wrestling career.
“I chose Navy because it gives me the best opportunity to succeed in life and a top-notch wrestling culture,” he said.
Navy's coach is Cary Collat, a Pennsylvania high school wrestling legend from Jefferson Morgan.
Campbell had offers from VMI and Gannon, as well as strong interest from several other schools, including Purdue, Pitt, Kent State, Cleveland State, Seton Hill and Pitt-Johnstown.
The Knights' 189-pounder said, oddly enough, it wasn't until after the loss that he realized he had Division I potential.
“I made it all the way to the bloody round of Beast of the East, the second most difficult high school tournament in the nation,” Campbell said. “I lost 3-2 to the 15th ranked wrestler in the country at the time. After that match, my confidence skyrocketed and I knew I belonged at the highest level.”
The guy he almost upset was Hanover Park's Vincenzo LaValle, who committed to Princeton.
Campbell was 29-7 this season and 87-37 when he took over ahead of the individual postseason, but was plagued by injuries last year and did not qualify for the WPIAL tournament.
He is ranked No. 5 in Pennsylvania and will compete in the Powerade Tournament early in the season.
