As a child, herbal chemist Julie Longyear was at her best in the kitchen.
Eventually, her interest evolved into a love of ceramics, for which she earned a degree from the University of Kansas. Although it wasn't a complete antidote, the therapeutic nature of this activity helped her when she was suffering from migraines. Several doctor visits and drug interactions led her to become interested in herbalism.
In her soul-searching to determine the root cause of her illness, she delved into the power of plants and aromatherapy. After incorporating this knowledge into her own life, she felt better. Her migraines have gone from 20 to just 2 a month, and her herbalism has grown into a calling.
Then she turned to a new challenge: a solution for her sensitive skin. Longyear wanted a skin care product that wouldn't leave her skin feeling tight or shiny throughout the day.
“I used ingredients from aromatherapy products that I had on hand. I had been blending essential oils, so I started thinking about creating something that would work for my face,” says the 30-year-old, who holds a chemistry degree from the University of Missouri in St. Louis. Longyear said.
Longyear founded Blissoma, an independent direct-to-consumer business offering holistic, botanical skin care solutions. As its name suggests, “Brissoma” means a joyful body, denoted by the prefix “bliss” and soma, and is defined in biology as a body distinct from the soul, mind, and spirit.
“Essentially, our goal is to help people feel really good in their bodies,” Longyear said.
Blissoma sells “green” moisturizers, masks, exfoliants, sunscreens, toners, candles, essential oils, and more. For Long Year, products must be effective and sustainable.
As lead formulator, Longyear works with compostable herbs and pays close attention to the amounts extracted from different botanical sources, something she makes clear to the farmers she works with. Masu. (One farm is a two-hour drive from the brand's headquarters in St. Louis.) The products are cruelty-free, vegan, solar-powered, organic and free of petrochemicals. not.
“I think plants are a great way to improve skin self-care, because providing those building blocks can really help boost your own natural production,” she says. I did. “Botanicals help rebuild multiple types of ceramides in the skin.”
