From Wednesday, Feb. 21 to Thursday, Feb. 22, Virginia Tech celebrated its seventh annual 24-Hour Giving Day. The event started at noon and ended at the same time the next day.
Minimum donations started at $5, but donors were welcome to donate more.
Giving Day is a day when the Virginia Tech community gives to the university based on their interest in a particular department, college, team, or organization. Popular gifts this year include the Pamplin College of Business, the Hokie Scholarship Fund, the College of Engineering, and more.
This event offers people the opportunity to win prizes for their category through online challenges. One of these challenges was a social media word search. One of the user's girlfriends who completed the word search correctly was randomly selected to unlock a gift for the department of their choice.
Additional prizes were awarded to the divisions that received the most funds. In addition, he was awarded $5,000 as he placed first in giving more than $3.5 million to the Pamplin College of Business. The Hokie Scholarship Fund placed her in second place, receiving an additional $4,000 for more than $1.9 million in donations. This was followed by the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences. All three also received additional funding from the university.
The event ended with a total of $13.1 million in donations, breaking last year's record of $9.6 million in donations. Last year's Giving Day he ended with 16,841 donors, but this year he had 18,946 donors.
Donations were received in all 50 states. A total of 21 countries participated in Giving Day, from the United States to Australia.
“It's so thrilling what the Hokie Nation can do together in 24 hours. The generosity of our community doesn't surprise me, but it inspires me,” said the annual Endowment Director Anne Bolton said in a statement to VT News.
