The NCAA Tournament is one of the premier competitive formats in college athletics, but the allure of March Madness doesn't stop experts from adding more teams to the tournament field.
One expert who opposes the idea of expansion is ESPN's Jay Bilas, who trashed the NCAA over the idea of expanding the NCAA tournament field.
Bilas rejected the idea ESPN's College Gameday Broadcast“Never underestimate the NCAA's ability to do stupid things. If they did something like that, it would be very stupid.”
Talk of expanding the NCAA Tournament seems to come up every offseason, but experts like Bilas have vocally opposed that possibility.
“When someone says more teams need access to the tournament, now every team has the same access to the tournament,” Bilas said. “All you have to do is win the automatic bid for your conference, which pits you against your peers in the group of teams you choose to participate in, with all teams already in the tournament. All you have to do is win the conference tournament. You're already in the tournament.”
Bilas ended his thoughts by comparing tournament standings to toilet paper. Go to 96 and print the bracket first on legal paper, then on a roll of toilet paper and roll it up. That doesn't make sense. ”
The 2024 NCAA Tournament begins on Tuesday, March 19th, and Selection Sunday will be broadcast live on Sunday, March 17th.
