Realizing a greener future
This Earth Day, we encourage everyone to think about their impact on the environment. At Starship Technologies, we're proud to be at the forefront of sustainable last-mile delivery, pioneering battery-powered robotic services that are good for business and good for the planet.
Our commitment to sustainability is evident in our service areas around the world, reducing the number of cars and delivery vans traveling to and from urban supermarkets and providing choice for U.S. students. This has a significant impact on reducing CO2 emissions. Choose battery-powered robot delivery over traditional food delivery methods.
To put our efforts in perspective, our robots have now traveled over 6 million miles. This equates to 645 trips from the UK to Australia, or over 2,300 trips from New York to Los Angeles, or his 244 trips around the world. By having customers use battery-powered robots instead of traveling by car, they have been able to reduce their CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by approximately 1.7 million kilograms. This equates to a passenger flying his 6,792 hours on the plane.
But we don't stop there. We are always looking for ways to further reduce our environmental impact and make our operations more sustainable. Where possible, we rely on renewable energy providers to charge our robots and are currently experimenting with different charging methods and deployment processes to increase efficiency while reducing energy consumption.
But sustainability isn't just good for the environment; it's also good for business. Let's be real here. Concerns about the bottom line are primarily holding companies back from updating their operations towards more sustainable solutions. According to a 2023 study by McKinsey & Company, over the past five years, products that claimed environmental and social benefits had an 8% higher cumulative growth rate than those that did not. Customers value sustainability and are backing it up by shifting their purchasing patterns towards sustainable products. In conclusion, the report notes, “It is a moral obligation for both consumers and businesses to understand and address these impacts on society and the planet as part of their purchasing decisions and ESG-related actions.” are doing. Product label claims can be an important part of fulfilling this moral obligation if they represent genuine and meaningful environmental and social action. ”
At Starship, we're proud to help our partners achieve their sustainability goals and initiatives. Since last year, we've partnered with delivery giants like Grubhub to give students across the country the opportunity to have their favorite meals delivered to them in an environmentally responsible way while making their daily lives on campus more convenient. I did. This is a win-win for the university, the students, and most importantly the environment. Similarly, we are helping our grocery partners increase their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint by offering on-demand, battery-powered store-to-home delivery in cities around the world.
We are also passionate about encouraging others to take action towards a greener future. The story of our employee Andrew Tucker is a case in point. Two years ago, Andrew and his wife donated a car to National Public Radio as part of a vehicle donation program. So they funded his NPR to create a local broadcast that included some of Andrew's favorite shows, including “Morning Edition,” “The World,” and “Wait Wait Don't Tell Me.” At the same time, I got rid of my unwanted car. For them, owning a car was an unnecessary headache, and donating a car was in line with their desire to live a greener life. Andrew says working at Starship has inspired him. “I feel like my values for environmental protection are reflected in his goals for Starship…I absolutely want to see fewer cars on the road in the future, and Starship is making this a reality. “We're starting to do that.”
This Earth Day, we encourage everyone to take action towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Every small step makes a difference, whether it's donating your unwanted car, practicing more mindful consumption, reducing your energy consumption, or simply choosing to walk or cycle instead of driving. By working together, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and the planet.
