Social media is full of posts from forest department officials and authorities warning people not to get too close to wild animals and what to do if you come across one. However, there are videos on the internet showing people doing the opposite and risking their lives in the process. IFS officials asked X to reshare an old video of a man prodding an elephant with a stick.
IFS officer Surendra Mehra reposted a video tweeted by Kaushik Barua, another user of the microblogging platform, in 2022.
“When humans lose fear of wild animals and wild animals lose fear of humans, it is not coexistence but a recipe for disaster,” Barua wrote, noting that the incident took place in Assam.
Mehra reposted the video and wrote, “Absolute insanity. How can a person think like that? Such provocations will definitely lead to human-animal conflict.”
The video is short, but certainly scary. It depicts two men standing in front of a herd of elephants. One of the men approaches the elephant in front of it and pokes it with a stick. The video ends with the elephant charging towards the men and both of them running away.

How did X users react to the elephant video?
“Indeed, it should be avoided,” user X wrote. “Strict measures are needed,” added another. “And it's called human-animal conflict. In reality, it's stupid animal-animal conflict,” a third posted. “A truly shocking act. Lives are in danger. The manner in which the youth attacked Jumbo invites deadly retaliation,” the fourth man added.
