Offense isn't the problem for Louisville women's basketball.
The 20th-ranked Cardinals are averaging 75 points per game, which ranks them sixth in the ACC and tied for 42nd nationally. U of L coach Jeff Walz said his program is 329-29 when scoring 70 points or more. Louisville suffered its 29th loss on Sunday, falling 86-70 to No. 8 Virginia Tech as a result of defensive mistakes and injuries.
Walz said the Cardinals' post players play good defense, but the guards have to become better defenders.
“We don't just want to lock down, we just want people to not get hit,” Walz said. “You can't lose and you have to understand your role. That's the biggest challenge. Even if you're not the best defender in the team, you can't be the worst defender, especially when you play in a team. That's a lot. “

Walz praised the defensive efforts of Nina Rickards against Daiisha Fair (Syracuse), Hannah Hidalgo (Notre Dame) and Georgia Amoore (Virginia Tech), but said the rest of the Cardinals' backcourt “doesn't work for us. “They need to be given effort,” he said.
The margin for error is getting smaller as Louisville begins its final four-game series of the regular season against Georgia Tech on Thursday.
