FAYETTEVILLE, AR — On Tuesday, February 20, Fayetteville Animal Services announced a $1,000 donation from the Ozark Humane Society to help cover the cost of microchipping 100 pets.
Chase Jackson, executive director of the Ozark Humane Society, said the money was received in the form of a grant from Best Friends Animal Society specifically for spaying, neutering and microchipping programs. He decided to donate to Fayetteville Animal Services to help impact more animals.
Fayetteville Animal Services posted after some pretty windy days in northwest Arkansas. They adopted out a lot of dogs and had them microchipped over the course of the week. There was no dog,” Jackson said. “I thought there had to be a way to get people on board. And microchips aren't cheap.”
At Fayetteville Animal Services, microchipping typically costs $20, but now anyone in Northwest Arkansas can bring their pet in for free microchipping.
“This is to help people who maybe can't afford the normal cost of a microchip,” said Brianna Curry, animal services program manager at Fayetteville Animal Services. “Microchipping a pet is the quickest and easiest way we can get them back to their owners. It's clear proof of ownership.”
Curry said she sees many pets entering the shelter every day that are not microchipped. This can cause shelters to become overcrowded and owners to be left without their pets.
“Nearly all animals that are put up for adoption either have incorrect microchip information or are not microchipped,” Curry said. “If they don't have a microchip, we detain them for five days and give their owners a chance to come forward. If they do have a microchip, we detain them a little longer. We will contact them for 7 days until we contact the owner.”
Jackson said by collaborating with other agencies, they can help more animals toward a common goal.
“The sheer number of animals in need of homes is something we all struggle with for the same reasons, none more common than ensuring that every animal in Northwest Arkansas has a chance at a great life, a forever home.” No points,” Jackson said.
If you would like to take advantage of this service, Fayetteville Animal Services asks that you call in advance of your arrival.
