Orlando, Florida – News 6 wanted to know: Why does my cat do this?
NEWS This week, six employees sent in photos and questions that were answered by Dr. Angela Avok of Bay Hill Veterinary and Cat Hospital.
The questions are:
1. Why does my cat try to enter the bathroom with me while I use it? She is constantly scratching at the door trying to get in, even if the door is closed. And when I let her in, she immediately tries to get out. Very frustrating!
“Cats are very curious and want to know what's behind invisible doors. What are you doing there? Why can't you involve your cat? If the cat comes in and the door closes, the cat can get caught up in it.'' The discomfort of being “trapped'' is stimulating her, so she wants to go outside again. (It's also possible that she just wants your full attention, and what better way to do that than to have her do her bidding by opening and closing the door at her command?)
2. I had a cat who didn't like chewing on wire. I had to protect them to avoid possible electrocution. Of all the cats I've owned or been around, only one had such a habit, but virtually all of them had some type of chewing habit. Why are cats so attracted to things like wires, and why do they actively seek them out?
“Chewing on wire can be dangerous, so it's great to protect your cat from electrocution. Cats may like the oral sensation that chewing on wire provides (kitten teething comes to mind. Even more interesting are the “dangling toys'' that cats hang from. If a cat comes down from an electrical outlet or desk, it can “kill” it by hitting it, jumping on it, or biting it. If your cat chews the cord, you may need to see a veterinarian. Swallowing the wire can be a problem for your cat. Injury to the gastrointestinal tract or chewing on live electrical wires can cause mild to severe electrocution. ”
3. I have one cat who likes to chew on my hair while I sleep. My other cat likes to scratch at the farm shutters every morning around 4am. why is that?
“Your cat loves you!! Cats groom each other when they bond, and they show their friendship by grooming you too! They always I want your attention, usually early in the morning, which is important.'' Don't train your cat to interact with you while he's sleeping. Although it is very difficult to do so, you can extinguish this behavior by not reacting in any way (whether you stand up to play with your cat or tell it to stop, it is completely normal for your kitten to do so). (Not a problem – it's still a caution!) I know it's really hard to do, but after the behavior goes unnoticed for 2-3 weeks, they will wean themselves from the behavior. ”
4. My cat loves drinking water from the tap because cats (both domestic and wild) love running water. why?
“One theory is that during evolution, cats had to find their own clean water sources. When it comes to water, cats have diverse wants and needs. Some cats prefer running water, others prefer very cold water. Some cats like water, like ice cubes in a water bowl. Some cats only drink filtered water. Some cats only drink water from a coffee cup placed in the middle of their owner's bathtub. I know one. For each cat, I say! Location: Place water in different types of containers in different areas of the house and see which one your kitten likes best. Please. Does my cat like it when I turn on the faucet every morning for him to drink water? I think he just likes that I know that. , I'll do anything you ask me, because you have that cute face, I can't say no.”
5. Why does my cat always lick my dog's face?
“It's great that your dog and cat are such good friends! And just like any good friend, your cat also wants your dog to look his best. Cat will naturally groom their preferred mate as a sign of affection.”
6. Why do my cats perform a circus at night or suddenly have bursts of energy when everyone is trying to sleep?
“Ah, the cat circus…has been putting on a nightly show in homes everywhere for decades! Cats are usually more nocturnal than we are. Outdoors, they hunt at night, and generally at night. They are active and sleep during the day.In our homes, we tend to go out to work or school during the day and cats spend much of that time resting, so when we prepare them for bed Once this happens, your cat is ready to use up all of its stored energy. What you can do to help with this is to give your cat plenty of attention during the day and have playtime (and dinner) right before bed. , cats tend to groom themselves after eating and want to get a long, comfortable night's sleep.
7. My cat has this toy and puts it in his mouth and meows. Her cries get louder and louder and she eventually drops the toy on my bed. Why would she do that?
“This seems to be a behavior that goes back to the cat's hunting instinct. She seeks attention to show off her hunting prowess. This behavior can start very early. I saw a 3-week-old kitten.'' The kitten waddled around the room with a new toy in its mouth, making cute meows. Two years later, I'm still doing this behavior. This can also be a sign of separation anxiety. I know a cat who walks around with a ball of fluff in his mouth only when the cat feels lonely and the owner is busy. If your cat seems distressed, discuss options for anxiety with your veterinarian. ”
8. My cat loves scratching on fabric furniture instead of leather. I have also tried other scratchers. Why would she do that?
“Scratching is a normal and important behavior for cats. It helps the cat stretch, keeps the claws sharp, leaves scent marks (pheromones), and keeps the function of claw movement intact.” It's similar to why cats go to the gym. Different cats like different things. There are textures (cloth, sisal rope, cardboard, wood, etc.) and cats prefer the feel of that particular fabric. There may be cases. Also, some cats prefer horizontal scratchers, while others prefer vertical ones. It may take some time to find what your cat likes. You will also need time to move your cat to something you want it to scratch on, rather than something you don't want it to scratch on (such as fabric furniture). Talk to your veterinarian about the products currently available to get your cat into approved training. Scratching posts, how to trim your cat's nails, pheromones to help reduce stress, environmental modification, and temporary caps to put on your cat's nails during retraining.
9. Is there such a thing as a “tort”?
“Furious cats are usually described as being a bit hot-tempered, stubborn, and demanding. There is no scientific evidence linking fur pattern and personality. However, many people believe that their cat has a ferocious personality. Most of the mutters I've seen are: “They are very kind and affectionate cats, and they tend to form strong bonds with their owners.'' However, when your cat feels a little better during an exam or treatment at Bay Hill Cat Hospital, we want to let you know that your calico is showing its face. ”
10. One of my cats goes to the corner of the house and jumps. It's like trying to climb a wall. Why does my cat do this?
“That's a big deal! If there aren't any rodents hiding in the walls or little insects in the corners of the room, it might just be something she likes. As we often say, ' The cat has changed…but we are very happy.’ It’s still fun to watch!”
11. My cat likes to eat bubbles and drinks bubble bath water when I'm taking a bath. She also likes to lick lotion and other things off my skin. Why does my cat do this?
“There are many things in the bath water that tempt cats. First, you're in the bathtub, so you're her human. Second, the water is moving, so cats like moving water.” Third, the water is fresh. She achieved the trifecta! When it comes to licking skin, cats like to lick everything. Curious about new scents and tastes. It seems like it could be the oils in the lotion, or maybe she just likes grooming to show you that she cares. Cat's Mood After Grooming If this doesn't work, please consult your veterinarian.”
