san antonio – For the thousands of people who visit the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo every day, it takes a team to ensure the food on the premises is safe.
KSAT followed Metro Health in having staff inspect some of this year's rodeo food.
“We want to make sure people are washing their hands. Food is at the right temperature, both hot and cold,” said Kazel Ramos, senior environmental health officer at Metro Health. said.
Metro Health inspectors visited various booths at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.
“We're looking for signs of insects and rodents,” Ramos said. “In this case, there was nothing.”
One inspector will arrive in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
Ramos said inspectors will also check whether each piece of equipment is functioning properly.
“We also have them inspect the coolers and refrigerator units to make sure they are working,” Ramos said. “In some cases, a unit disappears overnight. And we want to make sure that the unit's food is still edible and safe to serve.”
This year's rodeo will feature 80 food and beverage booths, including Fajita Coral. Metro Health said it has not found any issues with the health code so far.
“We always have to be prepared for inspectors,” said Fajita Corral manager Deborah Jaime. “We have to take away the disinfectant. If it's not up to date, let us know and we'll go back and fix it. But that's the norm.”
The rodeo isn't over yet, but Metro Health is already preparing for future events. He said he is meeting with vendors to participate in the fiesta, which begins in April.
