UNION, S.C. (WSPA) — At Boyd Street and Coroner on Lockhart Highway in Union is Davis Produce, a small fruit and vegetable stand with a long history in the area.
“If you ask anyone in Union, the Davis family is known for their produce and boiled peanuts,” said Elaine Robertson, grandmother of the owner of Davis Produce.
Owner Alex Calhoun said the business started in 1939.
“My great-great-grandpa started it with a truck, and then my grandpa followed in his footsteps, then my grandma here, and my uncle did it for a while,” Calhoun said.
After Calhoun's uncle retired, Davis Produce was closed for two years.
“A lot of people miss that,” Calhoun said. “Grocery stores aren't the best for choosing produce, and Davis fresh produce is out of stock, so I decided that's what I could do. And I thought I could do it pretty well. So, I just said, let’s step out of there and see what happens.”
Mr. Calhoun said he has been running the family business for a little over a year now, at the age of 18, and has never looked back.
“A lot of customers come in, a lot of people come in, a lot of people talk about your family and what they’ve seen over the years when they’ve shopped with us. That means a lot,” Calhoun added.
Calhoun's grandmother added that it meant the world to see him carry on his family's legacy.
“I love it. If my dad was looking down from heaven, he would be happy because this is in his blood and he loves it. And to know that his great-grandson is doing it now. , it's going to be a very fulfilling day,” Robertson said.
Previously open seasonally, it is now open year-round, according to Davis Produce.
