According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters across the country each year. Of these, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and approximately 3.2 million are cats.
Each week, The Arizona Republic features several pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. Please contact the shelter directly to confirm the status of a specific animal.
Callisto: a senior malamute with the energy of a puppy.
It's no exaggeration to say that Callisto has perfected the art of tilting his head over the course of seven years of his life. With a puppy-like spirit, this senior pup is the perfect blend of playfulness and gentleness. A perfect testament to the joy of adopting an older pet, cute Callisto hopes his charming personality will help him find his forever family soon.
Callisto is a fluffy Alaskan malamute who came to the Arizona Humane Society earlier this month after his previous owner became ill and was unable to provide the care he needed. After examination by AHS veterinarians, this sweet boy was found to be a little sensitive when it came to handling medical exams, but was otherwise very healthy for his age.
Bright, loud and kind to nature, Callisto prefers a peaceful home where she can adapt to her new life. With positive reinforcement and being allowed to go at their own pace, your furry pup will certainly be a bright spot in their new home.
Recruitment method: Interested owners can meet adorable Callisto at AHS' South Mountain location. His adoption fee includes spay/neuter, current vaccinations, microchip, and follow-up health exam at VCA Veterinary Hospital. For more information, visit azhumane.org/adopt.
Leroy: Bird watching and cuddles are his favorite hobbies.
At just four months old, little Leroy has been through a lot in his short life. Last December, an adorable orange tabby and her siblings were brought to the Arizona Humane Society with severe upper respiratory infections and underweight.
The child began treatment at the shelter's trauma hospital before moving into a loving Foster Hero home where he continued to grow big and strong. Now Leroy is back to her healthy self and can't wait to go home to her purr forever.
Leroy is playful, affectionate, and commands attention from everyone he meets, making him a great addition to any family. There's nothing this handsome kitten loves more than snuggling up with his favorite humans after a long day of watching adorable birds out the window.
Kitten season is upon us and there are many ways to help our littlest patients. With thousands of underage, orphaned kittens coming through her AHS doors, the shelter is in great need of foster heroes, volunteers, donors, and of course adopters.
Recruitment method: Those interested in fostering can meet the loving Leroy at AHS's PetSmart Scottsdale store. His adoption fee includes spay/neuter, current vaccinations, microchip, and follow-up health exam at VCA Veterinary Hospital. For more information, visit azhumane.org/adopt.

This intelligent and confident woman knows basic commands such as “sit” and “sit down.” She has been working with Friends for Life volunteers on leash manners and is very motivated by treats. She is eager to please and is very sweet when receiving her reward. Tiff is a big fan of having her belly rubbed, she loves lying in the sun or rolling around on the grass. She requires regular brushing to maintain her plush coat. Tiff was recently adopted, but she came back because she wanted to chase kittens, so she needs a cat-free home.
