Have you ever felt like everyone is glued to their phones? That's probably because we are. And as a result, your health may be negatively affected.
Spending extra time on digital devices like mobile phones and laptops can have a negative impact on your sleep quality, mental health, sense of belonging and connection, self-esteem, and even academic performance.
Taking time to intentionally step away from your devices can help reduce these effects. In fact, spending even a few hours without screens can help you relax, be more creative, connect on a deeper level, and enjoy meaningful experiences.
If you're feeling stuck in a rut or just want to take a break, here are some things you can do without a screen to brighten your day.
1. Try geocaching
Get out and join the world's largest treasure hunting community. Millions of clever containers known as geocaches are hidden around the world, and there are a few right here in Boulder. Download the free geocaching app and join the search, which will walk you through the steps of your first treasure hunt. Geocaching is not only a fun challenge, but a great way to get outside, add some adventure to your daily routine, and have fun with friends.
Don't stop in the snow
2. Take on a DIY project
DIY projects are a great way to express your creativity and upgrade your space on a budget. In fact, the Center for Student Involvement hosts free His DIY nights every month. We have everything you need and can easily register online. Upcoming projects include candle making, animal socks, tie blankets, soap making, succulent origami, and more. There are also sessions where you can choose your own crafting adventure.
3. Relax over lunch
Need a break from your busy schedule? Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) is offering a free Feel Good Friday meditation at the CU Art Museum every week from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. This meditation workshop will feature works related to mindfulness. Can't participate individually? no worries! Feel Good Friday can also be held on Zoom.
4. Go on a day trip
Did you know that you can visit museums and other tourist attractions for free? The Science and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), which covers most of Denver Metro County, offers free admission to museums, science museums, cultural sites, and more on select days throughout the year. That means you can visit places like the Denver Zoo, Botanical Gardens, Butterfly Pavilion, Denver Art Museum, Denver Museum of Natural Science, and Molly Brown House for free. You can check out the complete schedule of free days online and plan your trip.
free cultural pass
Did you also know that many libraries offer cultural passes? These passes give you free admission to local cultural attractions. You will need a local library card to reserve your cultural pass. All Colorado residents can get a free library card. You can also sign up for a library card within your nearby county or region. Participating libraries include Boulder County Public Library, Denver Public Library, Demis Public Library (Littleton), Douglas County Library, Louisville Public Library, and Jefferson County Public Library.
5. Get together and play games
There are many ways to play with friends on campus, both indoors and outdoors. Here are two to try.
