“Lightning struck a man during a soccer match in Indonesia,” user X wrote while sharing a video of the incident. The clip depicts a player standing on the field who is suddenly struck by lightning. In an instant, he falls to the ground. Other players run towards the soccer player to help him.
The incident occurred during a friendly match between the two soccer teams at Siliwangi Stadium in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, local media outlet PRFM News reported. The paper added that witnesses said there were scorch marks on the jersey the football player was wearing.
On February 10th, the man was playing a soccer game when it started to rain. Shortly after, he was struck by lightning. Other players rushed him to Sarinsi Hospital for treatment. However, he was pronounced dead.
How does lightning kill people?
According to the National Weather Service, when a person is directly struck by lightning, as was the case with the soccer player, that person becomes “part of the primary lightning emission path.” This type of lightning strike occurs when the victim is outdoors.
Although rare, this type of impact is the most deadly. “Some of the current travels along the skin surface (called flashover), and some of the current passes through the body, usually through the cardiovascular and nerve systems.”
