Galloway, New Jersey – India Mental health often takes a backseat in the expansive university experience. Sophomore Holly Morrell recognized this gap and took the initiative to close it by founding a mental health advocacy club.
Morell said the club's purpose is for open-minded members who want to meet new people and make friends to join. The goal is to make this club as open as possible to anyone who wants to talk to peers who are going through the same college struggles.
“We don't require people to talk about their mental health unless they feel comfortable,” Morrell said. “The goal is to create a safe environment where students know they're not alone, even if they don't want to talk.” It’s about making it a club.”
To ensure wide participation, Morrell plans to post a survey on GroupMe and allow members to choose meeting times that fit their schedules. The conference promises an open and fun atmosphere with music, movies, games, study sessions and wellness workshops.
As a new club, the Mental Health Advocacy Club is gearing up for a promising academic year ahead, packed with activities aimed at promoting mental health awareness and support.
One notable upcoming event is a wellness workshop featuring Cait Massone, the club's off-campus advisor. Massone, a neurologist and mental health advocate, has published a book detailing his personal journey with mental health struggles. This workshop promises to be a combination of informative talks, engaging games, refreshments, and opportunities to connect with experts in the field.
Details will be announced in the future and will be published on OspreyHub and Instagram.
