The classic breakaway bar, once a staple of school lunches, has been discontinued by manufacturer Nestlé.
The chocolate biscuit bar was launched in 1970, but Nestlé said it had made the “difficult decision” to discontinue it after sales declined.
The company also said it would discontinue the Yorkie biscuit bar to avoid confusion with the “forever” Yorkie chocolate bar.
Fans on social media mourned the end of Breakaway's path.
“I’m not happy, I’m actually getting heated.” someone said.
However, many also admitted that they have not bought it in several years.
“I was a little sad that breakaways were discontinued until I remembered I hadn’t had one since the ’80s.” a man said.
Nestlé said Breakaway would no longer be produced from March to make way for investment in other products.
A Nestlé spokesperson said: “We know our fans will be disappointed to see this product disappear, but the time has come to say goodbye to Breakaway.”
“Sales of Breakaway have declined in recent years and unfortunately we have had to make the difficult decision to discontinue it.”
The spokesperson added that the company has many new products in store for 2024, adding: “Please keep an eye on this area.”
Breakaway was originally launched by Rowntree Mackintosh in 1970 and was later acquired by Nestlé in 1988.
Like Breakaway, Caramel Bar fans said they were “devastated” by Nestlé's decision. “Rest in peace Mr. Karamac,” one user of X, formerly known as Twitter, lamented.
