The data comes from a population-based cancer registry maintained by the Homi Bhabha National Institute's Memorial Center in Mumbai in collaboration with the Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI).
Professor JS Thakur, PGI Department of Community Medicine and Public Health, said that many cancer patients reach PGI in the third or fourth stage of cancer, which is why the results are not very positive. “As part of the national non-communicable disease prevention program, and as directed by the government to strengthen preventive control measures across hospitals, we have increased our focus on screening for three cancers: breast and cervical cancer. Director of Health Services Dr. Suman Singh said four MoUs were signed between Chandigarh Administrative Health Department and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Center, New Chandigarh to improve cancer treatment services across the country. He said he provided technical assistance to the health department. Chandigarh and training of public health workers from various departments for cancer prevention and cancer control.
Dr. Sushmita Ghoshal, professor and head of PGI's Department of Radiotherapy, says that through detection and treatment, approximately one-third of all cancers can be cured. Cancer can be detected early by actively looking for the disease even before it becomes obvious, the doctor added. This process is called screening. “Oral cancer and cervical cancer are known to develop over many years through a continuous process of tissue change. These changes are initially precancerous and are caused by continued exposure to risk factors. By observing the tissue, it may be possible to detect changes much earlier and take appropriate steps to prevent the disease from progressing. Similarly, small nodules in the breast can be diagnosed by a systematic physical examination or confirmed with the help of X-rays or ultrasound. If detected in a precancerous or early stage , cancer treatment is highly effective, with fewer side effects and fewer disfigurements.”
According to Dr. Ghoshal, about 40 percent of cancers are preventable through lifestyle modifications and exposure to risk factors. ” Cervical cancer is associated with viral infections and can be prevented by vaccination at a young age. Avoiding/controlling these known risk factors can prevent the development of cancer. Therefore, it is important to know the risk factors that cause cancer. ”
Dr Jatin Sarin, senior oncologist at IVY Hospital, said that a few decades ago, breast cancer was only seen after the age of 50. “Currently, breast cancer is more common in younger age groups, with 50% of all cases occurring between the ages of 25 and 50. Breast self-examination and mammography can help detect breast cancer early. Cancer The number of new cases of cancer is expected to increase by around 70% over the next 20 years, and a third of cancers are preventable through lifestyle modifications, so awareness is key.”
