The clinic is named for Dr. Harold E. Kleinert and Dr. Joseph Kutz, who made Louisville their home after working at the University of Louisville as instructor of surgery and surgical resident, respectively, at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

The two founded the Kleinert Kutz Hand Center more than 50 years ago and helped make Louisville a world leader in hand and upper extremity care.
Kleinert, who operated on thousands of patients, died in 2013 at the age of 91. In 2020, Mr. Kutz, who performed the world's first successful hand transplant, passed away at the age of 92.
